Heissan taas,

viikonloppu kului siis Lincolnin maisemissa. Nyt täytyy näin heti alkuun korjata kaikkien harjaluulot. Ne, jotka luulevat, että britit alkavat juttelemaan aina ventovieraiden kanssa on täyttä huijausta! Kuuden tunnin junamatkan aikana kukaan ei jutellut minulle mitään! Eräs vanhempi herrasmies kysyi oliko vastapäinen paikka vapaa, mutta muutoin oli melkein yhtä hiljaista kuin suomalaisissa junissa :D

Lincoln ei siis oikeastaan ole kovin kaukana, sinne on vain hankala matkustaa. Näin matkalla Nottinghamin, Derbyn ja Newarkin asemat ja maisemia junanikkunasta tietysti. Menomatkalla jäin kyydistä Newark Castlessa, missä tapasin Heinin ja hänen kämppikset. Vietimme muutaman aurikoisen tunnin pikkaisessa kylässä tehden ostoksia ja lounaalla pubissa.

Kävimme mm. punnan kaupassa hakemassa muutaman tavaran, torilla hakemassa hedelmiä ja leivokset sekä käytettyjen kirjojen kaupassa, josta tietysti piti ostaa roskaromaani kahdella punnalla kotimatkalle, kun takakannessa mainittiin Helsinki :D

Lincolnissa Heini esitteli kävelykierroksella kaupungin nähtävyydet. Oli mukava viettää rauhallinen viikonloppu kivojen ihmisten seurassa ilman party-hypetystä. Satuimme katedraaliin iltamessun aikana - katso video ja kuvittele loput.

Tietysti olin hieman kateudesta vihreä, kun tytöt asuivat neljästään ja keittiössä oli telkkari ja sohvat (JA SIISTIÄ!). Tässä vaiheessa voinkin mainita, että olimme saaneet ensimmäisen (minun aikana) tarkastuksen ja moitteita siisteydestä majoitusvalvojalta (kiitos kämppikset).

Tällä viikolla alkoi siis koulu. Tai siis tänään :D Tiistaina kulutin koulun penkkiä tunnin akateemisen kirjoittamisen kurssilla. Olin hieman pettynyt, kun, kurssi jolle tänään osallistui, olisi muutoin ollut varsin loistava ja haastava, mutta opettaja ilmoitti, ettei Erasmus-oppilaat osallistu muutoin kun kommentoimalla kurssin pääsisältönä olevaan raporttiin. Anteeksi kuinka? Olen täällä opiskelemassa viimeisiä kurssejani ja joudun kommentoimaan muiden työtä ja tekemään itse todella vähän... Nyt ei joku mene jakeluun. Taidanpa palata opettajan puheille, sillä olen tullut tänne oppimaan taitoja tulevaisuutta varten enkä kommentoimaan toisten työtä. Toinen pettymys päivälle oli, kun espanjan kurssi oli peruttu. Tai siis selvisi, että se oli peruttu, kun olimme istuneet puoli tuntia luokassa odottamassa opettajaa ja menimme itse selvittämään mistä on kyse. Lapun jättäminen oveen olisikin ollut kovin haastavaa.... Olen siis nyt jonotuslistalla espanjan kurssille ja tiistaina selviää lopettiko joku, että pääsen kurssille. Ei siis kovinkaan tyydyttävä aloitus.

Toivottavasti huomenna menee paremmin.

Lauantaina suuntaamme Lontooseen opiskelijakunnan retkelle. Päiväretken hinta oli 20 puntaa, johon sisältyy kuljetukset, opastettu bussiajelu ja sisäänpääsy Tower of Londoniin. Ei paha hinta siis, kun junaliputkin maksavat noin 30 puntaa edes takaisin :)

Siinä taisikin olla suurimmat uutisotsikot tältä viikolta. Kirjoittelen sunnuntaina lisää, miten Lontoossa meni :)

So I spend my weekend in Lincoln.  Before I go any further I must correct all the brush beliefs you guys have of the Englishmen. Those who think that British people always begin to talk with strangers, is a complete hoax! During a six-hour train journey no one talked to me anything! One older gentleman asked if the seat opposite to me was available, but otherwise the crowd was almost as quiet as in the Finnish trains :D

Lincoln isn’t really have very far from B-ham, it’s just hard to reach. I got to see the Nottingham, Derby and Newark stations on the way and landscape, of course, from the window. On the way there I hopped off in Newark Castle, where I met Heini and her roomies. We spent a few hours on a sunny day in a small town shopping and enjoyed a lunch in the local pub.

We went to e.g.  pick up a few things in a pound shop (everything for one pound or 98 pences), the market place looking for fruits and cakes, and second hand book store, where of course I had to buy a trash novel with two pounds for the train trip home, because in the the back cover was mentioned Helsinki :D

In Lincoln Heini presented me the the city's attractions on a walking tour.  We hit the Cathedral during the evening Mass - see the video and imagine the rest.
It was nice to spend a quiet weekend accompanied by lovely people without any need to consume loads of alcohol. I regret that we missed the opportunity to eat deep-fried Mars-bars for breakfast on Sunday due to the fact the shop was closed. Otherwise, I had really pleasant time with the girls.
Of course, I was a little green with envy, when the girls lived the same apartment  and the kitchen was equipped with TV and couches (and it was neat!). At this stage, I can also mention that we had the first (during my time), inspection at my flat and we got complaints of the cleanliness from the accommodation manager (thanks for the roomies).

So this week school started. I mean today :D On Tuesday I spent in the school bench for one hour in academic writing course.

Today when my real courses began I was a little disappointed with the overall arrangements… My first lecture was really interesting and challenging (just my type of a course!), BUT the teacher reported that the Erasmus students don’t participate in the actual report except by commenting. Excuse me? I'm here to study and to learn the industry I want to for in and they tell me that I have to comment on other work and make myself practically nothing... Something is not right here.. I guess I'll go back to the teacher to have a talk, because I have come here to learn the skills for the future and I do not settle for this. Another disappointment of the day occurred when the Spanish course was canceled. Or, it became clear that it was withdrawn, when we sat for half an hour waiting for the teacher, and went ask what the deal was when no one showed up. I figure that it would have been too challenging to leave a note on the door.... So I am now on the waiting list and have to go and see if I can get  to another course on Tuesdays. So the beginning wasn’t so satisfactory as I had anticipated.

Hopefully tomorrow will go better.

On Saturday we’ll head to London organized by our student guild. Day trip price was 20 pounds, which includes transportation, a guided bus tour and admission to the Tower of London. Not a bad price when considering that the train tickets cost about 30 pounds back and forth :)


So there were the biggest headlines of this week. I'll write more on Sunday, as I return from London :)

PS. If someone could send me some Finnish licorice and rye bread that would be awesome! (just kidding :D)
